It’s a trend happening across the country, and in Orange County, the unemployment rate continues to drop – now at 4.4 percent.  Orange County Register’s Michelle Rafter and Decision Toolbox CEO Kim Shepherd examine what this means for employers and the 2015 job market in the article Year of the job seeker: With growth across multiple industries, applicants are back in the driver’s seat.

Local companies that don’t change their hiring tactics to account for the shift are in for a rude awakening, says Kim Shepherd, chief executive of Decision Toolbox, an Irvine recruiting agency that works with companies around the country, including in Orange County.

Gone are the days when companies could post an open position on a job board and watch the resumes fly in. In 2015, companies will have to work harder to market themselves, and use social media to do it, especially if they want any chance to connect with younger workers, Shepherd says. They also have to be mobile-ready, with phone-friendly career websites and job applications people can fill out from their iPhones.

“Employers, if they want to get good people, have to learn to court them,” says Shepherd.

If current demand for new employees turns into a full-blown talent drought – which some workplace experts forecast could happen by the end of the year – it could help drive up wages and lead to more generous perks.

Forward-thinking employers are already making themselves more attractive by playing up incentives and perks such as telecommuting, casual-dress days, ice cream Fridays and the like. “Employees are starving for that stuff,” Shepherd says, “and smart companies are making hay out of it.”
