A generation ago the teleconference was a luxury, convened only by those with status and something to say. Just about anyone today can convene such a call. That’s a triumph for telecommunications, but a downer for those who have lost untold hours to unnecessary or unproductive calls. Familiarity has definitely bred contempt.

But with a few behavioral tweaks and attitude adjustments, your company can clean up its teleconference etiquette and turn these marvels of remote collaboration back into the brisk, informative sessions they were meant to be.

Cultivate respect.Most of the work of holding a good conference is done for you if your audience is on time and attentive. Those who call the meeting, and the senior sponsors who attend, should lead by example by being on time and locked in. That means showing up no later than the start time and putting aside the multitasking.

“It’s important for everyone, including senior management, to value everyone’s time,” said Loren Miner, chief operations officer of Decision Toolbox, a recruiting products and services company with a virtual workplace.

The company has a “sit or sing” policy that requires latecomers to sing as they log in to meetings. To thwart any limelight-seeking karaoke warriors who might actually enjoy the punishment, the song is chosen by the on-time attendees, not the scofflaw.

“Since we adopted the policy, we haven’t had many people arrive late,” Miner said.
