DT Thought Leadership:

Kim Shepherd Advises How to Create a Mentoring Culture to Insurance Business Canada

mentoring culture

Kim Shepherd’s company Decision Toolbox doesn’t do things the traditional way. The former television journalist turned CEO spurned traditional hierarchy for a mentorship system that places relationship at the fore rather than authority.

“(At Decision Toolbox) you’re in an environment where nobody ever gets scolded for anything. In that type of love-fest environment you can do all kinds of miraculous things,” Shepherd said of her company of about 100 employees. And as the organization grows, she intends to keep the current structure intact.

It’s a strategy that she believes can translate to companies of all sizes, citing Trader Joe’s and Starbucks as examples.

“I completely disagree with the concept that as you get bigger you start to fall apart on culture,” she said. “You can be the exception if you think exceptionally.”

5 Predictions for the Future of Mobile Recruiting: Dominick Bernal Advises Recruiter.com

future of mobile recruiting

Today’s Question: At Recruiter.com, we’re wondering what the future of mobile recruiting will look like. What do you think? What tips, tools, technologies, or tactics will dominate the mobile recruiting space in the coming years – and why?

Advice from Decision Toolbox’s Dominick Bernal:

Train Up Your Employment Brand

train up your employment brand

In consulting with hiring managers (HMs), I often hear “I don’t have time to train, so you have to find me someone who can hit the ground running.” It’s understandable: when you’re shorthanded, the idea of adding training to your to-do list can be daunting. In today’s highly competitive job market, however, that approach is problematic.

Suppose a hiring manager, Natalie, needs to replace a Java Developer on her team. In her estimation, the person who can hit the ground running must have at least five years of hands-on experience. Given the tremendous demand for Java talent, though, it may take six months to find an interested and available Developer with those qualifications. Yet it might only take three months to train someone with a year or two of experience — and that person could shoulder at least some of the workload during training. “One to two years of experience plus the ability to learn quickly” is a much larger pool than “at least five years of experience.”

Establishing a whole training department may be possible for larger companies, but there are other options for smaller and mid-sized organizations.  Read more here.

Back in 1977, a beekeeper from Upland California with a knack for inventions named Paul Pierce was tired of his wood frames with wax foundation. He was constantly spending time tending to the frames instead of his bees and they were easily mangled during transport and harvesting. Paul thought: Why not make the frame and foundation all in one, out of a durable material that could withstand the rigors of commercial beekeeping? And that is when the idea for the one-piece Pierco frame was born. Paul contacted renowned Southern California plastics expert Edward Fleming and the two collaborated to develop the industry’s first plastic frame. And the rest, as they say, is history.
