Recruiting Plan – It’s a road trip!

If you’re going on a road trip you need to know how you’re going to get there.  We think you should take the same approach to recruiting. The ultimate goal is to get a quality hire, but unless you’re designing what you want, you may have to deal with what you get!

So how do we go about designing what we want?  At the launch of every DT search our recruiter and writer hold a Discovery Call with the client. Our writer is gathering information to create a branded marketing piece that the recruiter and sourcer will use to engage talent. From the information gathered on that call the recruiter puts together a Recruiting Plan.

Obviously we need to understand the requirements of the position, the location, the compensation and target companies – that’s recruitment 101. However, in order to really represent the client and the position our recruiter needs to clearly understand the true selling points of the position along with what the marketplace has to offer by way of candidates. Our recruiter stores this plan electronically so that our quality team, the sourcer, marketing and client services can always access the plan. After all, if someone is helping you drive then they need to know the route. This document is alive and breathing. Each person can see what’s been done so far as each participant updates the document live via 24-hour access.

This web of inclusion means that everyone is able to answer questions to the client when necessary. The recruiter can then take a consultative approach with the client by reviewing the intelligence gathered and making recommendations.

Not everyone reading this is in recruitment. However, all businesses and customers can benefit from the concepts here.

Have you noticed a scarcity trend in IT when trying to hire top talent in your market or a niche skill set?  Does it feel as scarce and as dry as the Sahara?  Is there little to no traffic in the well when you post a job? Here’s the bad news, it likely will get worse as increase for talent rises and A players have more options.  The good news is, our seasoned IT team of 10+ years each gets it.  We have been there and we have tools in our arsenal to help you navigate where to find that talent, identify, entice and negotiate to successful hires.  Roles like Java Engineers require deep sourcing and extra effort to attract passive talent.

Java Engineers rank yet again on Dice’s top 10 skills need for 2014.  In the last 6 months, in the San Francisco bay area, there have been 6,485 postings with only 520 active candidates looking for a new role.  Mind blowing! What does that mean? When you find a rock star, engage and move quickly.  That Engineer likely will be on and off the market before you can say “Oasis”.  Compensation, emerging technology, quality of product and projects need to be exciting and enticing.

The Supply and Demand report gives us great data points:

  • Facebook, Wal-Mart and GE are the top 3 places likely hiring and have a pool of resources to consider in the Bay Area.
  • Title variations to consider when marketing the position (candidates search for roles very simply).
  • Industries that have the highest need and likely bigger population we can draw from.
  • Other markets where the job seekers are.  If we are having trouble finding local talent, target a market where you can relocate from!
  • Active workforce years of experience of those looking, typically a more Sr. level individual ready to make a move, 30% of those looking in San Fran have 6-10 years experience.  Salary should be in line with that profile as well as title.

Heartbleed Security Notice

On April 7, 2014, researchers disclosed a vulnerability in a technology called OpenSSL that powers encryption across much of the internet. The vulnerability is commonly known as the “OpenSSL Heartbleed Flaw.” More information about the bug can be found here:

Our team took immediate action to secure Recruiting Machine’s infrastructure against this flaw. Recruiting Machine is no longer vulnerable to the Heartbleed Bug.

Although we have no reason to believe that any part of our service has been improperly accessed due to this vulnerability, as a matter of best practice we would like to recommend that all our customers reset their passwords. To reset your password, log into Recruiting Machine and go to “Help & Misc” and  then “Settings” to change your password.
