Recruiting Fillability – May the Odds Be Ever In Your Favor

Tips for increasing the fillability of your open positions

If a recruiter says they can fill every position, RUN! If they say they can fill your purple squirrel position if you make changes; then tune into what they have to say. Do they follow that statement with fact based knowledge and solutions? A knowledgeable consultative recruiter who takes an interest in your needs is golden.

We would love to guarantee a hire for every position. However, that’s like guaranteeing world peace. We use a Fillability tool to provide a visual foundation for a conversation. Positions are filled easier when:

  • The client is engaged
  • The talent is interested in the role
  • The role is competitively compensated
  • The position is in a desirable location

If any of those criteria aren’t true then one must make adjustments to increase the fillability of a position. Recruiters can source aggressively, court beautifully and create a great marketing piece about the position, but they cannot manufacture talent.

The sample Fillability tool pictured here is extreme. The opportunity is great, but the competition for available talent and location are poor. It’s not often that the trifecta happens, but the visual is powerful. One adjustment, just a little flexibility, can make a position fillable.

When selecting a recruiting partner:

  • Don’t just go for the cheapest
  • Don’t just go with the one who says they can fill it
  • Listen to the recruiter who is offering solutions
  • Be engaged. Filling the position cannot be more important to the recruiter than it is to the hiring manager
  • Be flexible

With a little compromise and partnering with a consultative recruiter, you’ll find your most difficult positions will have much better odds for getting filled with your ideal candidates.
