The Decision Toolbox Green Flag Rap

Decision Toolbox team member Jennifer, or “Jenn Ben” as she’s affectionately referred to around here, created a hilarious tip of the hat musical tribute to the DT tradition of the Green Flag.  You can hear her dope rhymes here:

The Green Flag Rap

What is the Green Flag?  A Decision Toolbox look back in history

The following is an excerpt from Decision Toolbox CEO Kim Shepherd’s book “The Bite Me School of Management” – you can download a complimentary copy here.

In the late 1990s I was at the San Diego Zoo at the primate enclosure, and along with about thirty other people I was watching the chimpanzees, mesmerized, as they rhythmically, slowly swung from branch to branch. Some of the older chimps sat on the ground, but everything about them was calm and restful.

Suddenly, out popped a small chimp from a hole in the wall, and he burst onto this peaceful scene screeching and jumping around like his tail was on fire. The crowd was immediately intrigued—what was up with this little guy? Was he hurt? No—he was excited—so excited he was running around the enclosure screaming . . . and waving something green. As the crowd watched this monkey celebrate, I shouted: “I’ve got the green thing! I’ve got the green thing!” As we laughed, the whole crowd was buoyed by the joy this little guy was expressing. It gave me an idea.

The following Monday, I shared this story with the team at DT and handed out a small green flag to everyone. From that point forward, everything worth celebrating at DT became a “Green Flag.” Landed a new project? Green Flag! Filled a position? Green Flag!! Great client survey? Green Flag!!!

It may sound corny, but the Green Flag creates exponential energy around simple everyday events. Again, a recruiter on our team expressed it best:

When I joined DT, I thought the whole Green Flag thing and all of the ‘woo-hoos’ and hugging was a little silly. Now, I land a project and I can’t wait to send out my Green Flag notice. Then, I sit back and wait for all of the congratulations to flow in, my smile getting bigger and bigger. It’s the best part of my day.

Now I know why our two newest HKA team members, found via an amazing Decision Toolbox recruiter, arrived waving green flags. And I just thought they were environmentally conscious!
